Solving for “WHY”

Solving for “WHY” will help you ask the right questions of yourself to understand your meaning and purpose. This book is meant for students (or professionals) who are interested in knowing the “WHY” of what they do.

Often in higher education, the focus is on the “WHAT” and the “HOW”. Faculty are subject matter experts who are capable of sharing their knowledge. However, if you are sitting in a class with 100 other students, how likely is it that you are working towards a better understanding of YOUR meaning and purpose?

This book will show you the questions that you need to answer for yourself in order to have direction and fulfillment in your life. The book also contains specific exercises to help you answer those questions. There are many stories in the book, stories from learners like you and stories from the author’s own experience as a student, corporate recruiter, career adviser, faculty, and university administrator.

Although the main audience of the book is learners in higher education (undergraduate and graduate), early and mid-career professionals would benefit from reflecting on the questions in this book as well. The answers to the questions may change, but the question themselves remain the same.

OTHER GREAT BOOKS WORTH READING

Education of Millionaires by Michael Ellsberg

When I read this book back in 2013, it immediately made clear the disconnect between what’s going on in colleges and what is actually useful for learners. A generation or two ago, it was important to have the degree. What was actually taught in schools didn’t really need to be coherent or even useful. Just having a degree gave you access to a comfortable life. This is becoming less true every day.

What are the useful skills? In this book, the author outlines seven of them. For example, Success Skill #6: Build the Brand of You. What you get in colleges is activities which you get to put on a resume. Creating a resume…is that really creating your brand? It COULD be, but more often than not, students go about this with the spirit of “accumulating” towards a resume that “looks impressive” rather than actually trying to understand one’s authentic identity.

Here’s another example, Success Skill #7: The Entrepreneurial Mindset. Universities are kind of like factories. You go to class and get taught the same thing that everyone else in the class gets. The system doesn’t really know who you are. It teaches you to conform to external standards. In essence, it’s training you to be an employee, or worse, to be a cog in a machine. What if you had to make a go of it on your own? You’d actually really need to step up your game.

If you are in school, and are kind of bored/disengaged/not seeing the point, reading this book will challenge your thinking. It’s still fine to be in school, but it’s important not to rely solely on the school’s curriculum. You need to take charge of your own learning.

Key Person of Influence by Kevin Harrington and Daniel Prisetley

I was recently reflecting on the fact that I don’t really watch much TV anymore. Partially because I’m choosing to do other things with my time, and partly that I’m watching YouTube content created by “normal” people. It used to be that large corporations controlled the media, whether it be TV, radio, publishing, and advertising. That’s not the case anymore.

Anyone now can use the tools create valuable content and develop a loyal following. You have to first find that niche. It should be something that you already have a curiosity for. Perhaps you really like vintage Italian sports cars. Well, that a niche that you can become one of the world top expert in. There are an endless number of potential niches where you can be an authority on. From that authority, you can make a living offering value from that perspective.

This book outlines the 5 P process: pitch, publish, product, profile and partnerships. You’d follow this process to build your authority within this niche. This book inspired me to write my own book, “Solving for Why.”
